Science Pub Corvallis -Sex and Relationships: Understanding Two 6–8pm Old World Deli Sexual behavior gets to the heart of some of our most intimate relationships. Qualities of relationships (such as satisfaction and commitment) and how couples communicate have an effect on individual sexual behavior and health. To better understand how sexual health is influenced by relationships and sexual partners, Marie Harvey and Jocelyn Warren of the College of Public Health & Human Sciences have conducted interviews with young adults in Oregon and California. At the Corvallis Science Pub, they will briefly discuss what we know about sexual health in the United States, share their methods for delving into such sensitive topics and discuss what they’ve learned from their most recent studies. Warren is a post-doctoral researcher whose interests include reproductive health, public health interventions and disease prevention among young adults. For more than 25 years, Harvey has focused her research on the prevention of unintended pregnancies and sexually transmitted infections among high-risk women, men and couples; and the influence of relationship and contextual factors on protective behaviors and sexual risk-taking. She has received funding from the National Institutes of Health and the Centers for Disease Control and was recipient of the 2008 Carl Schultz Award for Lifetime Achievement in the field of Population, Family Planning and Reproductive Health from the American Public Health Association. |

Water for the World- Engineers Without Borders-OSU Annual Fundraising Banquet 6–8pm Corvallis Country Club The Oregon State University Engineers Without Borders group (EWB-OSU) is hosting a banquet at the Corvallis Country Club on February 17, 2012 at 6:00 pm. The purpose of the banquet is to raise money for the Lela Community Water Project in Kenya. EWB-OSU has developed a partnership with Lela and is planning the first implementation of the project. This summer students will travel to Kenya to oversee completion of a community well and expansion of a rainwater collection system at the Lela Primary School. This year, our banquet has been sponsored by CH2M Hill and will feature a catered dinner, performances by local entertainers, and a presentation on our project in Kenya. EWB-OSU’s annual banquet is the biggest fundraiser of the year, and this year the goal is $8,000 with the event. The cost is $50 for the general public or $35 for students and children. Tickets can be purchased by visiting www.ewb-osu.org/banquet or reserved by emailing fundraising@ewb-osu.org for purchase at the door (RSVP is requested). If attending the banquet is not an option, consider making a donation online at www.ewb-osu.org/donate or by mail (EWB-OSU, 103 Memorial Union #262, Oregon State University, Corvallis, OR 97331). Checks should be payable to EWB-OSU, which is a 501(c)(3) charitable organization, so all donations are tax deductible. More information about the Lela Community Water Project can be found at www.ewb-osu.org/kenya_project. The cost of materials for the upcoming implementation is estimated at $16,000. This amount includes hiring a professional well driller and tanks and construction materials for the rainwater system. Airfare for the trip has been provided by Emirate Airlines. Student travelers are determined through a formal selection process, and a professional engineering mentor will travel with the team. |
